Reflections on Ruth

Reflections on Ruth

The recent passing of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg made me reflect on the importance of defying the odds, speaking out for what you believe in and being true to your core values. Justice Ginsburg championed equal rights for women. She worked hard to fight discrimination, gender bias and stereotypes.  (NYT obituary). But it was not always easy. She had to prove herself over and over as she started her career rise. Though qualified, she was turned down as a Civil Service GS-5 level claims examiner because she was pregnant and told she could not travel for the

Rules Matter Unless They No Longer Make Sense

Rules Matter Unless They No Longer Make Sense

I was never great at following directions or rules. I always tried to rework everything and asked too many questions. It was more why and why not than okay and I accept. I spoke up and disregarded people who told me to “shut up.” Rules do matter. Guidelines are good. But if they no longer make sense and seem archaic, then speak up and figure out a way to rewrite the rules. For years – centuries- we’ve lived in a country where rules and laws were made and set by a majority of men. But times change and rules should as well to stay current with the times. They need need revisiting, especially when

Super Women. But Not Super Human.

How does she manage it all? You may wonder this reading about a woman you admire or a friend who is constantly juggling many projects. The answer is: She doesn’t necessarily. Something must give. Or she has help; she delegates. Recently, I spoke on a panel called New Year. New Career hosted by the New York chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier, a national organization whose members are comprised of leading women in food, fine beverage and hospitality. I was one of four panelists who shared their career transition stories. The other three were: Joan Coukos, an investment banker turned chocolatier whom I

How to How To Have Harmonious Hormones. Dr. Prudence Hall

I am convinced that many of the ills women faced are because our hormones go out of whack. January is Thyroid Awareness Month. Did you know women are more likely to have thyroid disease than men? And most individuals are unaware they have thyroid disease. That’s because the many symptoms of a thyroid imbalance are often attributed to another condition, like menopause. As a result, nearly half the people with thyroid disease are not diagnosed, or misdiagnosed. Source: The American Thyroid Association  www.thyroid.org On January 17th my guest is Dr. Prudence Hall, who specializes in regenerative medicine. Many of Dr. Hall’s patients

Here’s To the “Trouble Makers”

Here's To the "Trouble Makers"

I have a soft spot for trouble makers. But these are not the rabble rousers armed with animosity who incite violence and criminal acts. I’m talking about the people who question outdated rules and conventions that no longer work and challenge behavior that for too long has been inappropriate and unjust. They speak out when others remain silent and take action when many hold back in fear of what people will think. They question the “norm” when it no longer feels comfortable and right. They are deemed unconventional in the face of convention. They are full of conviction when others remain complacent. People sometimes refer to them as “trouble

I Won’t Back Down. And Neither Should You

I Won't Back Down. And Neither Should You

October 11 is officially “You Go Girl! Day.”  It’s a day to celebrate women of all ages for standing up and speaking out, beating the odds and staying the course, making an impact and creating opportunities. In the words of the late musician Tom Petty, “Stand your ground. Don’t back down.”  Many people are frustrated with what is happening in the world and in the U.S.A., but few take action. Words may bring awareness and start a conversation, but actions start a movement and make the difference. If you want to see change happen, start with being the change you want to see by taking
