Author Eve Schaub documents her 12 month effort with her family to clean out her home and its stuffed to the rafters “Hell Room” in her book, “Year of No Clutter.” Eve discusses the emotional reasons why people collect things and hesitate to toss or donate them when no longer used or needed. The Best Affordable Health Care- But, Here's the Catch

Many of us have faced the highs and lows of securing affordable health insurance. It’s especially hard for self-employed freelancers and other independent contractors.  We are now on our third health insurance plan after our two former insurers were no longer available to us on the New York Health Exchange which is our best option for “affordable” health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  Now the ACA is changing, and we are waiting to see how our coverage and costs will be impacted. But, I have news for you: I finally found a good health insurance plan with a low annual

Healthy One Pot Dishes That Will Stir Your Appetite

Healthy One Pot Dishes That Will Stir Your Appetite

I love one pot dishes, especially those hearty ones to enjoy on a wintry night with a side salad and a glass of wine.  But hearty sometimes is not healthy. That casserole may be stick to your ribs delicious but it may be sticking you with added calories, sodium and fat. That’s why I love Linda Gassenheimer’s book series written under the health guidelines of the American Diabetes Association. With obesity in America at an all time high and a major cause for Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke cancer and many other chronic illnesses, this series provides common sense

Why Family Meals Matter

Why Family Meals Matter

While many families gathered around the Thanksgiving table this week to enjoy a delicious meal and share stories, think about this: The family meal is a dying tradition the rest of the year. In the past 20 years, the frequency of family dinners has declined 33 percent according to the meal planning service, The Six O’Clock Scramble www.thescramble.com. In 1970, Americans spent 26% of their food budget on eating out; by 2010, that number had risen to 41%. During that time, rates of obesity in the United States more than doubled. Many of you may say, “But I have no time to

It’s Time to Draw the Line About Crossing the Line

It was a sunny day on the tennis court that summer, and more than the weather was heating up. We were coming to the end of the set. My ball hit the net. We both went up to retrieve it. As we lifted our heads our eyes locked. His were deep blue, and they stared at me intently. He reached over the net and grabbed the back of my neck and started to kiss me. My heart raced. Sound romantic? It wasn’t. The man was my direct boss at the public relations agency where we worked, and he had crossed

Don’t Let a Wipe Out Knock You Down

Don't Let a Wipe Out Knock You Down

These two words sent shivers of dread down my spine: Fatal Error. My website content had been wiped out with no warning. Years of writing were missing. Was I hacked? Did I hit a wrong key? No one could figure it out at first. And, I did not have an adequate backup plan in place. I’d put saving money over safeguarding my site. At one point we weren’t sure if we could recover everything. I started to spin the scenario in my head. “Maybe this is an opportunity to create something new. I’ll start over with a fresh approach,” I said to myself. Fortunately, my

Because Love Should Never Hurt

Because Love Should Never Hurt

Sex is supposed to feel good. Right? But for 20 to 45 percent of postmenopausal women sex is downright painful. There’s a medical term for it: dyspareunia  It can happen to many women after childbirth or during and after treatment for an illness such as cancer. It is a frequent complain among post menopausal women due to low estrogen. Some refer to it as  “sexual dysfunction.” I don’t believe it means you are dysfunctional. You may want sex, but it may be painful due to physical changes in your vagina such as extreme dryness and atrophy.  Some women suffer in silence. Others abstain
