Recently sidelined due to circumstances beyond our control we watched the world pass by from a window and screen. Boats cruised the river. Friends posted vacation photos. Technology linked us to family, friends and news. The world outside was sunny and active. Inside, the room was quiet and still, though the setting was more restless than restful.

We released our frustration over canceled plans and resolved not to let an unfortunate detour deter our spirit. We adjusted our attitude rather than allow ourselves to feel derailed. We tried to make each day count rather than count the days. Ordering in different takeout foods became a daily treat. Things we take for granted, like stepping outside became a wish finally granted. The warm summer night air was a welcome kiss on a cheek.

I learned as a professional event planner that nothing is perfect. Something is bound to happen, and you have to be prepared the best you can.  Rather than ruminating on what went wrong you have to focus on what went right. When it happens in your personal life, you deal with the deck at hand and stay focused.

Fortunately our detour is expected to be relatively short. For some there is no end. A trip lost can be re-booked. A life lost can never be recovered. The experience taught us that life may not always give you the best of what you want. So make the best of what you have.
